Is it possible to view the code behind the existing apps on the phone? I know about the samples, but it'd probably be easier to adapt an existing application like photos to do what I want to do.

You can find the existing apps in /usr/palm/applications on the emulator (ssh to port 5522 on localhost, username root, no password). You can browse through them there.

you can also archive the apps folder and upload it to a ftp server with
Code:
root@qemux86:/# ftpput -v -u someusername -p somepassword someftpserver.com apps.tar apps.tar

Does this mean I can access the phones OS root this way?

I would love to actually look behind the curtain as to what is going on on the actual OS, not just the apps.

Yes, you have root access once you do that.

However, note that many OS services are implemented in native code or Java, so you won't have source access to those things. You can see source for a large part from the opensource.palm.com portal, but not everything.

I took a look at a couple of the existing apps and thought I would try a minor change to see how it worked.

I loaded the code into eclipse, named it as a new project, and tried to run it (before actually making any changes). I've tried this with "notes" and "tasks" and get similar results -- a non-functional application. I guess I'm missing something obvious, but why wouldn't this work?

BTW, I loaded the code by making a tar archive of the entire app and then copied it to the eclipse directory.

where is the directory for eclipse?
I need to find files I have installed to my emulator. (where are they located? using putty?)
I am not talking about my source files, but looking for directory where your apps get installed.

I found /usr/palm/applications but that only lists apps that are preloaded.

for example which dir has my "data demo" app?

Thanks

So I am now here...

root@qemux86:/var/home/root#

I tried /usr/palm/applications but it says permission denied. Did I miss something? This is on the emulator BTW
